2019 IPSWA boys basketball all-state teams announced

DES MOINES — The Iowa Print Sports Writers Association (IPSWA) announced the 2019 boys basketball all-state teams on Tuesday. The teams were selected by print sports writers in Iowa during a meeting on Sunday.

Of 49 votes cast by sports writers and coaches in attendance, there was a tie vote for two Mr. Basketball candidates. Therefore, the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association has named Bettendorf’s D.J. Carton and North Linn’s Jake Hilmer as co-Mr. Basketball.

Carton, an Ohio State signee, averaged 24.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game for Bettendorf. The Bulldogs, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A by the Associated Press at the end of the regular season, finished the year 21-2 with losses to state runner-up Dubuque Senior and fourth place North Scott. He had a career-high 49 points in a regular-season win over Davenport West.

With more than 25 Division I offers, the 6-foot-2 point guard is a five-star prospect and ranks among the top 30 recruits in the country for the 2019 class. He has committed to play in the Iverson Classic this spring. A three-year starter and a first team all-stater the past two seasons by the IPSWA, Carton scored a school-record 1,198 career points along with snagging 372 rebounds and dishing out 257 assists. The Bulldogs played in one state tournament and won 49 games in his three years.

Hilmer capped a brilliant four-year career by helping North Linn to the Class 2A state championship. The Lynx went 102-4 in his career, with a first-place state finish and a second and a third.

Hilmer averaged 26.1 points per game (2nd in Class 2A), shooting 57.8 percent from the field. He led the state with 263 assists. In his career, the 5-foot-11 point guard headed to Upper Iowa University for basketball and baseball, set state records for most single-season assists and steals and career assists and steals. He is the only player in state history to surpass 2,000 career points (2,332) and 1,000 career assists (1,106).

It is the first time since 1999 that two players have shared Mr. Basketball honors. That year, Sioux City West’s Kirk Hinrich and Iowa Falls’ Nick Collison shared the title. Both went on to play for the University of Kansas and later in the NBA.

IPSWA announces 2018 boys basketball all-state teams

DES MOINES — The Iowa Print Sports Writers Association (IPSWA) announced its inaugural boys basketball all-state team on Tuesday. The teams are selected by print sports writers in Iowa, and honor the top-24 high school boys basketball players in each class.

Muscatine senior Joe Wieskamp was selected as Mr. Basketball by print sports writers and coaches. The University of Iowa signee averaged 33.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per game as the Muskies reached the Class 4A state tournament for the first time in 16 years.

Wieskamp, who accounted for nearly 60 percent of his team’s scoring, shot 56 percent from the field and almost 85 percent from the free-throw line. He finished his career with an Iowa Class 4A-record 2,376 points, sixth on the all-time scoring list. A consensus top-75 recruit in the 2018 class, Wieskamp tallied double-figure points in 88 of his 91 career games, including the last 62, and registered 46 double-doubles.

IPSWA announces 2018 girls basketball all-state teams

DES MOINES — The Iowa Print Sports Writers Association (IPSWA) announced its first-ever girls basketball all-state team on Tuesday. The teams are selected by print sports writers in Iowa, and honor the top-24 high school girls basketball players in each class.

Iowa City High senior Ashley Joens was selected as Miss Iowa Basketball 2018 by print sports writers and coaches.

A versatile 6-footer and an Iowa State University signee, Joens averaged 30.7 points and 11.4 rebounds per game as the Little Hawks finished 25-1, with a Class 5A runner-up finish at the state tournament. She shot 61.8 percent from the field (including 59.5 percent from 3-point range) and 80.3 percent from the free-throw line.

She concluded her career with 2,178 points, which ranks No. 13 in five-player state history.

To be selected as Miss Basketball, a player must be a senior and must have been selected to first-team all-state in their respective class. After a nomination process, discussion takes place and a vote is taken. The player receiving a majority of the votes is declared Miss Basketball.
