2023 IFCA/IPSWA Football All-State Teams

The 2023 Iowa Football Coaches Association/Iowa Print Sports Writers Association all-state teams are below:

The bolding of names carries no significance in the lists below.

Class Captains

5A – Connor Moberly posted a 25-1 career record as the starting QB at Southeast Polk High School and led his team to two state championships in both his junior and senior seasons. The 2023 state title was the Rams 3rd in a row matching Dowling Catholic as the only other big school to achieve such a feat. The Iowa State commit threw for 2,403 yards and 26 touchdowns while completing over 66% of his passes. He rushed 52 times for 222 yards and 6 touchdowns pushing his total touchdowns to 32 on the season. 

4A – The Class 4A captain is Curtis Witte, a senior wide receiver, defensive back and team captain at Lewis Central who is committed to Wayne State College. Witte helped lead the Titans to their third straight championship game appearance and their second state championship in the past  three years(2021,2023) . Curtis finished his senior season 2nd in receiving touchdowns (10), 5th in receiving yards (825) yards on offense, 3rd in interceptions (5) on defense and 1st in punt return yards (370), 2nd in punt return touchdowns (2) .  Curtis finishes his high school career as one of the most decorated players in school history as a two-time state champion, one time state runner-up and two time all-state football player. He holds the following school records at Lewis Central: Single Game Records, Receptions (10) and receiving touchdowns (3). Single Season Records: Interceptions (8) and receiving touchdowns (13). Career Records, interceptions (18), receiving touchdowns (23).

3A – The Class 3A captain is Derek Weisskopf, the Williamsburg senior played multiple positions for the Raiders. He will wear the black and gold at the University of Iowa next year. Weisskopf led the Raiders to three consecutive trips to the final four.  He played multiple positions for the Raiders in all three phases of the game during the 2023 season. On offense he passed for 1,123 yards and 20 touchdowns, rushed for 2 touchdowns, and had 14 catches for 212 yards and 4 touchdowns. On defense he had 50 solo tackles, 4 interceptions, 1 fumble recovery and another touchdown. He was also the starting punter for the Raiders where he averaged about 38 yards per punt. Williamsburg had a record of 32 wins and 6 losses in his three years as a varsity starter.

2A – The Class 2A Captain is Preston Ries of Monticello.  The senior quarterback is committed to play at the University of Iowa next year.  Ries led the Panthers to their first State Semi-Final game since 1977 and led the state in total TD’s with 57 and Total Yards with 4485, including 2559 yards passing and 1926 yards rushing.  Ries also had 97 Tackles and 27.5 tackles for loss.  Ries ended his career as the all time career yardage leader in the State of Iowa, amassing 12,984 yards in his career.

1A – The Class 1A captain is Colin Gordon from Grundy Center.  Colin led the Spartans to back-to-back state championships in Class A in 2022 and Class 1A this year.  Offensively, Colin completed 67.2% of his passes at quarterback for 2,013 yards and 26 touchdowns.  He rushed for 688 yards and 11 touchdowns.  On the defensive side of the ball, Colin had 20 tackles, 2 interceptions for 55 yards, and 2 fumble recoveries for 124 yards, including a 97-yard fumble return for a touchdown.  Colin was also the punter and kicker for the Spartans.  He averaged 40 yards per punt.  He was 2/6 on field goals and 57/63 on PATs.  Colin had 71 kickoffs and 24 of them were touchbacks.

A – The Class A captain is Mitchell Smith.  The West Hancock senior quarterback led the Eagles to the class A championship in 2023, their second championship in three years and third straight championship game. He commanded the highest scoring offense in class A while rushing for 834 yards (8.7 ypc), passing for 642 yards, and accounting for 24 total touchdowns.

8M – This year’s eight-player class team captain is Caden Roethler from Bishop Garrigan.  Caden had a tremendous senior year leading the Golden Bears to a 12-1 record and a state championship in the 8M class.  Caden rushed for 1340 yards this season on 219 carries for a 6.1-yard average and 22 touchdowns.  He was a physical style runner and in the UNI dome ran for 181 yards and 4 touchdowns in the semifinals against #1 seed Winfield Mount Union, and 105 yards and 1 touchdown in the state championship game.  Caden also compiled 55 tackles this season.   Caden is still determining his plans for next year, but would like to go on and play football in college.
